This self-funded project strengthened the resilience of women in Yolde-Pate community to the impacts of climate change, recognising the central role rural women play in food production and household decision-making. Twenty women were trained in climate-smart agricultural practices, composting and organic fertiliser production, leadership and communication skills, and supported to form a Climate Action Committee and peer support groups. Community dialogue sessions with local leaders and men helped secure broader buy-in, while baseline-and-endline monitoring tracked gains in climate knowledge, adoption of climate-smart practices, and women’s participation in community decision-making.
Post-Implementation Progress: Following the completion of project activities, ACF has continued to support the sustainability of the women’s collective by facilitating the official registration of the women’s group. The women have also maintained their bi-weekly meetings, using the platform to share knowledge, discuss emerging climate-related challenges, coordinate and lead community climate action, and sustain peer support. In the process, the group has established a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA), strengthening members’ access to savings, internal lending, and financial support while reinforcing the group’s cohesion and sustainability. These post-project initiatives demonstrate the women’s continued ownership of the intervention and their growing capacity to independently organise, mobilise resources, and lead community-level climate resilience actions.

Building on ACF’s participation in a Training-of-Trainers programme with FAWE Nigeria, this self-funded initiative equips primary and junior secondary school heads across Adamawa State with gender-responsive pedagogy (GRP) skills — training school leaders to challenge gender bias, embed inclusive policies, and create safer, more equitable classrooms. Rather than working teacher-by-teacher, ACF targets school heads as the leverage point for system-wide change, since they shape school culture, policy and resource allocation. A pilot cohort of 15 school heads has been trained, with a phased scale-up designed to reach 1,500 school heads, indirectly benefiting over 26,900 teachers and more than 728,000 students across the state. ACF is seeking donor partners to help take this proven model to scale.

Ahead of COP29, ACF mobilised 50 young climate activists and change-makers (aged 18–35, including persons with disabilities) for a public awareness roadshow through Yola, from AA Lawan Junction to the gate of the Adamawa State House of Assembly. The self-funded action amplified youth voices on climate change, called on state duty-bearers to honour Nigeria’s international climate commitments, and distributed educational materials to the public, strengthening a visible, organised network of youth climate advocates in Adamawa State.

Through this AGILE-AF-funded initiative, Alimat Care Foundation trained 63 learning facilitators from Non-Formal Education (NFE) centres across Adamawa State in gender-responsive pedagogy, basic literacy and numeracy instruction, and life-skills delivery for adolescent girls and young women re-entering education through the Second Chance Education programme. Delivered in partnership with the Adamawa State Ministry of Education and the State Board for Mass Education, the project developed and validated a Life Skills and Livelihood Skills curriculum with stakeholders, trained facilitators through an intensive five-day residential programme, and provided ongoing mentorship and monitoring across NFE centres across implementation LGAs, strengthening the quality of non-formal education and creating safer, more inclusive learning environments for out-of-school girls and young women.

The Gella Climate-Smart Agriculture and Soil Conservation Project was implemented by ACF with support from the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme, address soil erosion, land degradation, and the increasing impacts of climate change on livelihoods in Gella, a farming community of more than 8,700 people in Mubi South Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria.
The project promoted community-led environmental restoration through the introduction of Vetiver grass as a nature-based solution for erosion control, alongside training on climate-smart agriculture, sustainable land management, and water-efficient farming practices. Working closely with farmers, women, youth, and community leaders, ACF established demonstration plots and strengthened local capacity to adopt practical approaches that improve soil health, conserve water resources, and enhance agricultural productivity.
Over the course of implementation, farmers increased their knowledge and adoption of climate-smart agricultural techniques, while community members gained practical skills in soil conservation and water management. Vetiver grass was successfully planted in targeted areas to reduce erosion and protect farmlands, contributing to improved environmental resilience. The project also created economic opportunities for young women, with 20 girls trained in backyard sack cucumber farming as a climate-smart livelihood activity.
To sustain the gains of the intervention, community environmental structures were strengthened to continue awareness raising and local action on land restoration and natural resource management. The project has been successfully completed, leaving behind improved community capacity, stronger local ownership, and practical, scalable solutions that continue to support climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and environmental conservation in Gella.

Breaking Barriers; is an ongoing initiative implemented by Alimat Care Foundation (ACF), with support from AmplifyChange, to strengthen access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information, services, protection, and participation for girls and young women in conflict-affected communities of Adamawa State, Nigeria.
The project responds to persistent SRHR challenges, including child marriage, limited access to accurate SRHR information, harmful social norms, and weak accountability for commitments affecting the rights and wellbeing of girls. Through a girl-centred and community-led approach, ACF is training girls as peer advocates, strengthening girls’ clubs and establishing community accountability structures that create safe platforms for girls to access information, build confidence, raise concerns, and participate in decisions affecting their lives.
The initiative also engages traditional and religious leaders, parents, community stakeholders, and local government actors to build stronger support for girls’ rights and improve accountability for SRHR commitments. Citizen scorecards provide communities with a practical mechanism to monitor and advocate for improved government performance on SRHR, while evidence generated through the project is used to inform policy dialogue and advocacy.
As implementation progresses, Breaking Barriers is building a network of informed and empowered girls and community champions capable of sustaining advocacy beyond the project period. The project is working towards strengthened community accountability mechanisms and the adoption of priority SRHR policy provisions by at least two local governments, contributing to a more supportive environment where girls can exercise their rights, access essential services, and participate meaningfully in decisions that affect their futures.

Commissioned by GIZ under its SEPIN-SUSI programme, this assignment supports Adamawa State’s roll-out of its Social Protection Policy, Legislative Framework, Stakeholder Engagement Strategy and Knowledge Management Strategy. ACF is deploying its five-pillar Community-Centred Framework Socialisation System (CCFSS); accessible communication and translation, multi-platform awareness campaigns, capacity strengthening for civil society and media, community dialogue, and evidence generation to help citizens, civil society and media across three LGAs understand, trust and engage with the state’s social protection frameworks. The project trains community-based organisations and monitors, runs town halls and dialogue sessions, builds journalists’ capacity to report on social protection, and generates evidence to guide adaptive delivery, closing the gap between policy design and citizen ownership.

Following Nigeria’s 2024 Supreme Court ruling granting local governments direct federal funding, Governance Watch is a proposed initiative to help citizens hold newly autonomous local government officials accountable. Funded by the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund, the project would train and deploy 75 diverse youth (at least 60% young women, 10% persons with disabilities) across Adamawa, Taraba and Gombe as local government accountability champions, equipped with governance scorecards to track officials’ budget transparency and service delivery. Trained advocates would convene accountability dialogues with elected officials, run pre-election candidate forums ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, and launch a #GovernanceWatchNG media campaign, while establishing a self-governing Northeast Youth Governance Network to sustain the work beyond the grant.
